LaFerrari, Ferrari’s first hybrid car was unveiled at the Geneva 2013 Motor Show by the Italian automobile company. The car was stated to be ‘The Ferrari’ by the chairman of the automobile manufacturer. There are only 499 models of the LaFerrari, which have already been sold according to the company.
The hybrid from Ferrari is priced at $1.5 million and has a top speed in excess of 350 kph. LaFerrari consists of a 6.3-liter V12, two electric motors, and a 132-pound battery pack mounted to the floor. One electric motor is coupled to the car’s seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transaxle while the other is used to power accessories.
The V12 produces 789 horsepower by itself and adding the electric motor’s 161 horse power, LaFerrari builds 951 horse power and 664 pound-feet of torque. Talking about the hybrid, Ferrari president, Luca di Montezemolo said, “We chose to call this model LaFerrari because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence. LaFerrari is the finest expression of our company’s unique, unparalleled engineering and design know-how, including that acquired in Formula 1.”
McLaren was not far behind from the Italian automobile giant as it unveiled its hybrid, McLaren P1. With only 375 in the series this model is also going to be a catch in its own rights. Priced at $1.27 million, the McLaren P1 can do 0-300 kph in under 17 seconds. The designers of P1 reportedly made sure that the hybrid was designed to give maximum performance.
Talking about growing hybrids, Toyota Europe executive, Karl Schlicht said, “If people start falling in love with hybrids, and if it’s a Ferrari or a Porsche, it is great. It is going to help hybridisation.” Toyota is the world leader in hybrid technology.
